PETROLEUM INDUSTRY SAFETY:
Relevant experience dates to on the job training with Liberty Mutual in the hazards of drilling operations in 1969. Subsequent to this, I took it on myself to study much of the safety information published by the API. While employed by Liberty, I provided safety consulting services for some units of Terminal Drilling Company, WODECO, and others. With Chubb/Pacific Indemnity, I headed up the company`s loss prevention activities for such clients as Tiger Drilling and producers such as Doheney. With Great American, I worked on aspects of various oil concerns such as Finley Production and Noble Construction. My heaviest career involvement was on the Tiger Drilling account. This firm had five rigs going for the years that I was consulting with them for Chubb, including one offshore. I have taught my students at U.S.C. quite a bit about the oil patch, because many of them are from oil producing companies and countries. The drilling floor has a myriad of hazards and is relatively unknown to most collegians, but serves as a good model for learning the control of hazards generally.. Good familiarity with drilling practices, supervision, loss control procedures, and accident reduction measures on a rig. Should the specifics of the situation require it, I also have contacts in the testing profession for more sophisticated expertise such as electron microscopy and the determination if a sites hardware was within specifications. Conducted many accident investigations in refineries during overhauls, insulating, rebuilds, and new construction, transmission, and producing environments as well as during drilling operations, rigging up and rigging down. These involved falls, fires, one blowout, machinery, burns, and material handling incidents New Release, 2004: Refinery Safety: Benefit Not Burden. The proceedings from a UCLA-LOSH-sponsored conference of the same name are included in this book. Topics presented include: "Overview of Hazards to Workers," by Dr. Ruth Heifetz and Jay W. Preston. |
